Of Silence and Power and Peace and Fear
“He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Silence! Be still!’ The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. The He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful? Do you still have no faith?’ And they were terrified, and asked one another, ‘Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!'”
Jesus spoke peace into a storm so strong a boat full of fishermen thought they were done for. He declared calm to wind so fierce it brought water into the boat. Waves broke over the sides of the boat and started filling it up. Yes, Jesus Christ spoke and the ferocious frenzy fell silent. The stroke of His vocal chords hummed harmony to the wind and the waves stood at attention before the King of Life right there in the middle of the sea.
The wind and the waves stood silent before Him in peace. And the men who were with Him stood terrified. Their fear from the storm turned to terror from the power of the One who calms storms with a word.
They were terrified. The God who speaks peace to water and wind was in a boat with them. They stood in the presence of the One who holds the power to stop a storm with nothing more than His voice.
He asked them why they were fearful when they woke Him up afraid they were going to die. Why are you being cowardly? Actually, that’s the word He used. Fainthearted. They were shrinking back from the storm they faced.
But when Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the waves and commanded their silence, they were terrified. They panicked because the One they just woke up, the man standing right in front of them, had the power in His voice alone to make waves in the sea just stop. His words made waves bow and wind stop dead in its tracks.
Jesus. The Christ. All-powerful. Almighty. Yours is the power and the might forever and ever. Amen.
